38-yer old Damchoe Sangpo, a member of Bongthak monastery’s Democratic Management Committee, set himself on fire and died. His protest has been linked to objections he had to a rigorous “patriotic education” campaign at his monastery as well as the banning of monks being able to mark a religious ceremony.
Damchoe Sangpo was a monastic official in the government-established body that runs the monastery.
